Challenge
Steel ropes can be used as flexible, non-extendable load-bearing members in the design of exceptional load-bearing structures. They can transfer loads over long distances. However, structures with a multitude of nodes seem less suited to ropes, as each node requires the rope to be interrupted and fitted with an end fitting. So how can a rope structure be designed without interrupting the ropes between the structural nodes?
Invention
The RES-Rope Structure uses endless ropes with stringed fittings that have parabolic saddle surfaces. These lead the ropes around corners, with the stringed fittings themselves resting in standardised clamps. Tension bolts press the fittings to the rope and the clamp simultaneously.
Advantages
- Advanced engineering with continuous ropes
- One-layered rope net
Applications
- Filigree load-bearing structures
- Wide-span photovoltaic plants
