Challenge

The configuration of the sails on a sailboat is determined by the rig. The mast is stabilised by the forestay and shrouds, which require the sails to be separated into a foresail and a mainsail. Consequently, a crew of at least two sailors is needed to sail the boat. What would the rigging of a yacht that can be handled by one person look like?

Invention

The RES-Yacht has a triangular sail that can turn around the mast unhindered. This is made possible by a new type of rigging that stabilises the mast without shrouds, using only bow and stern stay cables. The base of the mast must be placed on the keelson, creating a vertical lever between the bow and stern attachment points of the stay cables. This makes the mast stable enough to transfer the wind pressure taken up by the sail via the hull into the water.

Advantages

  • A simplified rig for a sailboat
  • New design for a yacht
  • Highly effective sailS
  • Enables quick and simple sailing manoeuvres

Applications

  • Rigging for small and large sailboats
